Siskiyou 135 Sled Dog Races area project of the SSDSA  a 501c6 non-profit organization.  The Siskiyou 135 Sled Dog Races are held under a Special Use Permit from the U.S. Forest Service on a non-discriminatory basis.

3rd Annual Free Dogsled Rides for Kids
Sunday, March 30th from 9 am till noon.

On March 30th from 9 am to Noon, bring your children or grandchildren for an experience they will not soon forget.  Siskiyou Snow Dog Sporting Association with the support of Dogsled Express Rides and Racing are conducting their 3rd annual Free Kids Ride Day to be held this year at the new Dogsled Express location between the Mt. Shasta Nordic Center and Mt. Shasta Ski Park on Ski Park Hwy. off of Hwy. 89 near McCloud.  Rides will be given on a first come in first serve basis.   Last year 91 children received rides.  Sign in will begin at 8:30 am.  Rides will begin at 9 a.m. and continue till noon.

This fun and educational event features Dogsled Express mushers Pat Campbell, Rick Cook and their teams of highly trained sled dogs giving a short ride to children ages 4 through 10.  SSDSA volunteers, mushers and skijorers will be helping to turn teams on the short loop trail, taking care of dogs, and answering general questions about Mushing and Skijoring.

Due to limited parking at the new Ski Park Hwy. location, there will be Snow Dog volunteers to help you park. Possible overflow will be handled by issuing numbers at a “Drive-through” and an approximate time to return will be given.  So pack a picnic, bring your sleds, skis, and snowshoes for a family snow day!

Children 4 and 5 must be accompanied by an older sibling (6 to 10 years old) or be willing to ride with some other older children.  Guardians of all children must sign a Hazardous Sports Release Form for each child.

Thanks to all of our dedicated race sponsors, SSDSA volunteers, and the special financial support of the Yreka Kiwanis Club, the Kids Rides Special Sponsor.  Also thanks to the USDA Forest Service Shasta/Trinity National Forest Ranger District for allowing the use of the Snow Park.   Dog Sled Express operates under a Special Use Permit by the USDA Shasta Trinity Ranger District.

2007 and 2008 T-shirts will be for sale along with sodas and snacks. All proceeds from the event will go toward the 2009 racing event scheduled for January 2009.

2008 Race were canceled due to extreme weather

The Siskiyou Snow Dog Sporting Association (SSDSA) was sorry to cancel the 2008 Siskiyou 135 Sled Dog Races scheduled for Jan. 11, 12 & 13, 2008.  The windy and snowy storm came through too close to race date to insure that we'd have safe trails conditions for our competitors.  The Forest Service confirmed that we'd made the right call on Wednesday. Their crews are having slow going clearing the trails due to the extreme winds and heavy snow fall which created blow-downs, and avalanche conditions.  Well - only one thing to do. . .  Carry on. . .

We have already begun preparing for the 2009 Siskiyou Racing Event.  Plans are to extend the 135 mile trail to 200 miles making it an Iditarod Qualifier -  Guess that will make it the SISKIYOU 200 Sled Dog Races!  and, to expand the racing venue to include Mid-Distance, Sprint and Skijoring races just like we presented successfully in 2007.  The 2009 event will be advertised locally and regionally as a spectator-friendly major winter tourism event for Siskiyou County.

If you or your business helped with the 2008 event as a sponsor, volunteer or organization, we appreciate your contributions of time and/or money greatly.  If you are a sponsor who donated money to put on the 2008 event, you will be contacted soon to receive a donation refund or to roll over your donation to help support the 2009 racing event.

Thanks!!! from all your Friendly, and Determined Snow Dogs.

RACE CANCELED - Press Release Jan. 6, 2008

After discussing the heavy snows and winds possible effects upon the trails with key Forest Service personnel, race officials, Vets, Volunteers, and Board Members, SSDSA Director, Pat Campbell, concluded that there is no way to guarantee that the 135 mile trail will be safe or even passable by race date.

Campbell states, "Our vets, race marshals, mushers and numerous volunteers are traveling at their own expense from all over the western states.  Some of them were planning to arrive as early as Wednesday. . .  We may not even know by Wednesday if the race route suffered blow-downs or if the teams would be safe from avalanche danger.  It's sad but better to postpone than have these wonderful people arrive and THEN have to cancel.  We had everything ready and then these storms came rolling through!  We are already preparing for the 2009 races. Thanks to everyone who's helped us over the years to bring this event to Siskiyou County."

The SSDSA is comprised of a growing group of local dog sledding enthusiasts whose goal is to promote Sled Dog Sports through educational and fun events.  Through these events, the SSDSA also promotes multiple use of public lands, economic growth and tourism in Siskiyou County.
