Snow Dogs Free Dogsled Rides
Race Volunteer Clarence Barger (on sled) and Ken Metcalfe (to his left) load up another full ride for Pat Campbell of Dog Sled Express, Siskiyou County’s local dogsled ride business. www.dogsledexpress.com. (Fur-rimmed Jacket to the left of Ken) The 2nd Annual Snow Dog free ride event was held at Deer Mountain/Chuck Best Snowmobile Park Rides. Sign in for rides began at 11:30. 91 children received free rides. Three mushers gave rides, thanks to the generosity of the Yreka Kiwanis Club. who helped defray insurance expenses and lodging for the traveling mushers, Pat Campbell of Dogsled Express, Rick Cook from Klamath Falls and Justin Harris from Bend Oregon. A big thanks to these mushers who are donated their time and teams for the annual free ride event. They were pleased that every child who came got a ride. Pat, Rick and Justin and their teams of highly trained sled dogs alternated giving rides throughout the afternoon with two teams at a time on the trail. The third musher was in charge at the start/finish line, loading passengers, rotating dogs, turn teams, and answering questions along with their dog team handlers. Special thanks to Dawn Harris for her help interfacing with the spectators and answering questions and allowing contact with the dog teams. The Siskiyou County YMCA and other Snow Dog Volunteers helped sign up passengers and turn teams on the short 1 mile loop that was prepared by Michele Cloutier-Valdez of Fun Factory Snowmobile Rentals. Special thanks to Nurse Donna Larson of Mercy Medical Mt. Shasta for her help with the sign-ups and just being available in the event of any injuries to the passengers, mushers, volunteers or to the dogs. Children’s activities, Food and Refreshments were served up by the Grenade 4-H Club. These 4H kids fulfilled their Citizenship pin with their help and the delicious cookies, hot dogs, coffee and hot cocoa were very appreciated by the spectators and volunteers. Special thanks to all of the 2007 Race Sponsors and again to the Yreka Kiwanis Club for their added financial support of the event, and to the Siskiyou County YMCA staff and teen leaders, and the Grenada 4-H Club for helping during the event. Also thanks to the USDA Forest Service Klamath National Forest, Goosenest Ranger District for allowing the use of the Snow Park. Visit www.dogsledexpress.com for more information on Dog Sled Express. Without theuse of Pat's special use permit and event giving insurance fulfillment, this event could not have happened. |
